What Does a Doula Actually Do?

If you read my first blog post, you know I started Allora Birth & Wellness because I believe families deserve real, compassionate support, especially during big life transitions like birth and postpartum. But what does that support actually look like during labor? If you’ve ever wondered what a doula does (or thought, “Wait, are doulas just for home births?”), this one’s for you.

When people hear the word “doula,” their minds usually go one of two directions:

  1. “Ooh, that sounds lovely… but I have no idea what that means.”

  2. “So... like a midwife?”

Totally fair. The role of a doula isn’t always well understood, and honestly, it can vary a bit depending on the doula and the family. But at its core, the work of a birth doula is all about support: emotional, physical, and informational.

So if you’re pregnant or planning to be, here’s what I want you to know about how doulas show up in birth spaces.

We’re your steady, calm presence
Birth can bring out all sorts of feelings such as excitement, fear, anticipation, vulnerability, and strength. Doulas are there to help you feel grounded through it. I’m not there to replace your partner or your medical provider. I’m there to support you, remind you of your strength, and offer a sense of calm in the middle of what can feel like chaos or uncertainty.

We offer physical support
This is what people often imagine - counterpressure during contractions, hip squeezes, breathing cues, position changes, helping you into the tub. Yep, that’s all part of it. But it’s not just about the “hands-on” work. It’s about helping you feel as comfortable and supported as possible in your body as it moves through labor.

We offer emotional support
Sometimes it’s a hand to hold. Sometimes it’s reminding you that you’re doing an amazing job. Sometimes it’s helping your partner feel confident in how to support you. It’s holding space, offering encouragement, and being the voice that says “you’ve got this” when you’re not so sure.

We share information (without pressure).
One of the most powerful parts of doula support is having someone who can say, “Here are your options” when things feel overwhelming. I don’t give medical advice or make decisions for you. But I do help you understand what’s happening so you can make informed choices that feel right.

We support your partner, too
Yep, doulas are for partners as well! I’m not there to take over, I’m there to help you both feel confident and connected. Whether that means coaching your partner through hands-on support or giving them space to take a breather, we’re all on the same team.

We stick with you
Unlike most hospital providers who may be in and out of the room, your doula stays with you throughout labor. That continuous care can make a big difference. We’re in your corner from start to finish, offering consistent support through all the ups and downs.

So, what does a doula actually do?
We help you feel seen, heard, and supported. We remind you that you’re strong and capable. We walk with you through the unknowns of birth, with respect for your choices and trust in your instincts.

And if I’m your doula, I’ll also probably make sure you’re hydrated, cheer when you find your rhythm, and celebrate the heck out of you when your baby is finally in your arms.

Because birth? It challenges us. And you don’t have to do it alone.

Curious if a doula is the right fit for your birth?
